The Everly Brothers – Tuesday Night Tunes
I know there are lots of articles being written about the Everly Brothers with Phil’s passing and I don’t want to spend too much time here but rather show you some great video clips and songs. A brief glimpse into the effect these two had on the music business and the sound we enjoy today.
I entered the outside world a little after these guys made it big but as I dig into music more now I can see the influence and soul of these two. My life and experience was very rural and until I got out of Elizaville, Indiana in the late 60’s and early 70’s and began to explore, I was not really plugged into the genre. I listened to the popular music but was not drawn in like I am now.
This clip is All I have to do is Dream released in 1958.
Clearly these guys influenced music coming up. No one would deny the Beatles have had a great career and have changed things forever but listen to these two clips and tell me who influenced who.
Cathy’s Clown
Beatles – Love me do
I think you can agree that the close harmonies of the Everly Brothers was carried and developed by the Beatles but without the first we might never have had the second.
And changing culture is something music has always done. Maybe culture changed music but in either case the next song was too much for radio at the time of it’s release. It was banned for it’s lyrics at the time in a few small towns (like Boston)
And the influence continues. Give a listen to these two and see how they helped mold the sound of two other musicians.
Bye Bye Love
Simon and Garfunkel – Sound of Silence
It says in Ecclesiastes 1:9 is says ” What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” and I believe that to be true. We build off of each other and if we are willing to give more than we take, everyone benefits (even the one giving). I got the list of songs from a news story on ABC and decided to use it to find clips of the whole songs and share that tonight.
I guess that means this is not new but it brings back memories of mine. Listening to a Zenith transistor radio that my dad got for me. I used to carry it to school and get it out at recess. Yes, it was elementary school and I remember songs like these that I listened too but never fell in love with them like so many did at my age. I am listening again at a much later time in life and finding enjoyment and connections I never knew existed. The transistor radio is gone but I am glad for YouTube and Google Music.
I will continue with the series Tuesday Night Tunes in the new year and I hope you find it enjoyable to listen to. If you have memories to share from your youth and how this music influenced you, please comment or email back. I would love to hear about it.
Thanks for listening,
Jerry Robertson
